Waiting to feel better

My ears are ringing. It’s unpleasant. Other than that, the house and the neighborhood are quiet. The occasional truck roars by on Highway 13, a couple of blocks up the hill.

I visited the dentist today. He was unable to tell me why a section of the gum below one of my lower front teeth is swollen, obviously infected. The dentist looked different today. When did he get so old?

Sending away for my new passports, E.U. and U.S., yesterday, I had to indicate my hair color. I avoided checking the box that said, “Gray.” I hesitated over “Brown.” I never said “Brown” in my life. But, my kids have been laughing at me for years for insisting my hair is “Blonde,” as it says on my driver’s license.

I just cored and sectioned three small apples. I put them in a casserole with brown sugar, water, pecans, raisins, and cinnamon. That will be my dinner tonight. It’s okay. I had a good lunch. I made the Rancho Gordo “Ayocote Negro” beans I slipped in one of the kids Christmas stockings. It had been left behind.

On the package, I read about a way to make the beans that sat better with me than the whole soaking-the-night-before routine. It said, saute aromatic vegetables (I used onion, carrots, and celery) in olive…
