Sardines are your best friends
Keep several tins in your pantry for easy, healthy, cheap, in-a-pinch meals
I wanted to go out for dinner tonight for the simple reason that it looks like a bomb went off in my kitchen, and I didn’t have the stamina or desire, honestly, to do anything about it.
I fantasized about dining at the new Thai place down the hill. Or trying the “succotash” at the new-ish brewery also down the hill. Or maybe walking over to the next neighborhood and getting a nice, square meal at the popular Grand Lake Kitchen. But I knew with chagrin they would all be too expensive, that my budget would groan, and that in all likelihood I’d feel guilty and regretful afterwards. I’d think about all of the things I could have made. I’d calculate what it would have cost me to make at home. I’d suffer.
So, I ate at home. But, our trial Instacart membership ended, and I knew I wasn’t going shopping. I briefly entertained the notion of UberEats, but the last (and only) time I’d tried that, it was a shocking disappointment. The food never arrived, and after all kinds of tacked-on fees, the meal was far more expensive than I’d wagered for. Luckily, I’d gotten my money back. But the idea of trying again just took the air out of me.
