Once I tried an experiment. I sat on the couch, dazed, bleary-eyed, staring off into space. The children played nearby and pretty much left me alone. But as soon as I picked up a book, answered the phone or, heaven forbid, tried to write, they switched into full attack mode and surrounded me like little commandos who have suddenly realized their defenses have been breeched and they need to regroup.
