Almond Birthday Cake with Sherry-Lemon Buttercream

What is a piece of cake? We all know what that is, assuredly. And I know I just consumed three pieces of the leftover birthday cake from the party I hosted for a dear friend last night. To be sure, I brought her a quarter of the cake today, and delivered a sizable hunk to the neighbors, but I kept a bit for myself too and am now in danger of basically going berserk and downing the whole thing by end of day tomorrow. I’m sure I will.

Will it have been worth it?

In this case, yes, I think it will. That’s because this is an unusually exceptional cake. A cake that is unassuming, that creeps up on you with her quiet delights. She’s not showy, she’s not excessively perfumed. She’s not cloyingly, shockingly sweet. Rather, she’s restrained and yet opens up as the finest flower of the bunch.

I’ve made this cake several times now, and it never fails to delight. It’s the Almond Birthday Cake With Sherry-Lemon Buttercream from the New York Times Cooking app, which I have found to be a great resource. The recipes are well-written and organized, easy to follow, uncomplicated, and deliver great results, in my experience. I know not everyone can access the link to the recipe, however, which is why I will provide the directions at the end of this missive. So skip ahead now if you just want to make the cake, damn it. :)
