A kick in the butt

Dynamism is contagious

I got a swift and much-needed kick in the butt the other day, by a virtual stranger. I say virtual because I met her only moments before she began… reforming me.

Reforming or encouraging?

Nah, this wasn’t gentle encouragement. These were, sit-up-and-take-notice, not-gonna-take-no-for-an-answer dictates.

I can’t call it advice. Advice is something you can take or leave. This person would brook no dissent.

Normally, we humans don’t like to be told what to do. We don’t like to feel judged, obviously.

But, I didn’t feel judged. In fact, I felt like she was on my team, even though I barely knew her. Somehow, she was rooting for me.

Her name is Laura, and I met her on a hiking trail about ten minutes from my house. I had gone to meet my friend Jan. Laura, who knew Jan from the trail, fell in with us as we began our trek up the mountainside.

She was opinionated, funny, smart, a fast talker, no-nonsense.

Somehow, we got on the topic of dating.

I’ve been feeling miserably old lately, and like, why bother?

She’d have none of it.
